American Association of Individual Investors

American Association of Individual Investors is a non-profit organization with nearly 150,000 members which was founded by James Cloonan, Ph.D. in 1978. The American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) seeks to inform individual investors on stock market portfolios, financial planning, and retirement accounts. AAII “assists individuals in becoming effective managers of their own assets through programs of education, information and research.” Because of its non-profit status, the company promotes itself as an impartial source of investment information.

The members of AAII show “investment returns that are consistently higher than those of the stock market as a whole” for the last thirty years (using the S&P 500 as reference). For educational purposes, AAII has held two actual portfolios, a shadow stock portfolio and a mutual fund portfolio, since 2003. The returns and content of these portfolios are available online, and site reviews have greatly outperformed the market over the course of their life.
